Trauma Counseling at Dayspring

Dayspring counselors received specialized training in techniques designed to assist individuals in resetting their minds and bodies following traumatic experiences. Distinct from other therapeutic approaches, trauma therapy frequently incorporates specific techniques to address and process distressing memories, thereby facilitating a more profound healing process.

Every trauma is your trauma and requires an individual approach. Dayspring counselors use various methods, or modalities that are employed to achieve this objective, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) among several therapies available to them.

Below is a short discussion on a few of the therapies that are proven to help people process their trauma. Your counselor will select therapies and techniques that are individualized to you.

CBT for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a therapeutic approach that emphasizes the interplay between cognitive processes and behavioral manifestations. By modifying thought patterns, individuals can enhance their behavioral responses. Trauma frequently engenders negative, distorted self-perceptions, often characterized by a lens of horror, pain, or shame. These beliefs are typically inaccurate and excessively critical. Using CBT, the Dayspring counselor facilitates clients in challenging these thoughts and providing a more objective, empathetic, and informed viewpoint. This aids the transformation of these detrimental beliefs.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a specialized form of CBT designed to address trauma in children and adolescents. However, its scope has since expanded to include adults and families. TF-CBT emphasizes educating clients about trauma and equipping them with relaxation and coping skills to manage their symptoms. Clients share and process their trauma stories, facilitating the integration of these experiences into their life narratives. TF-CBT can be delivered individually or in groups, and it is facilitated by therapists who adopt a trauma-informed approach.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for trauma equips clients with a comprehensive set of skills to effectively manage the debilitating symptoms that arise from traumatic experiences. DBT is structured around four fundamental areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Mindfulness facilitates clients’ presence, mitigating the adverse effects of traumatic memories. Distress tolerance empowers clients with the necessary tools to manage trauma triggers without resorting to self-destructive behaviors. Emotion regulation enables clients to comprehend and control intense emotions. Interpersonal effectiveness enhances communication and boundary setting, which can be compromised by trauma. By acquiring these skills, individuals experience enhanced emotional stability, resilience, and overall mental well-being. DBT treatment typically encompasses a combination of individual and group therapy sessions.

EMDR is a therapeutic approach designed to alleviate the sensitivity of individuals to traumatic memories by facilitating the recall and reliving of these experiences within a secure and therapeutic environment. During an EMDR session, the therapist utilizes bilateral stimulation techniques, such as eye movements, auditory stimuli, or tactile tapping, to facilitate the brain’s reprocessing of the traumatic memory. This process results in a diminution of the emotional intensity and distress associated with the trauma.
