Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at Dayspring

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is most often used by Dayspring counselors while treating adolescents that have experienced a traumatic event that is affecting their quality of life. TF-CBT offers a specialized and structured approach to addressing the psychological impact of trauma in children and adolescents. Its emphasis on psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, and collaborative family involvement make it a unique and effective treatment option.

Dayspring Center for Christian Counseling has counselors trained in applying these principles and techniques. Your treatment plan will depend on your initial assessment and ongoing evaluation to determine if TF-CBT is beneficial to you.

TF-CBT is an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help children and adolescents overcome the emotional difficulties associated with traumatic experiences. TF-CBT integrates cognitive-behavioral principles with trauma-sensitive interventions, making it a comprehensive treatment for youth who have experienced trauma, particularly those dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related symptoms. It was specifically formulated to address the unique psychological needs of children and adolescents, considering their developmental stages and cognitive abilities.

Dayspring counselors like this therapy because it typically involves not only the child but also their caregivers, fostering a collaborative environment that supports healing. This family-focused model allows caregivers to better understand their child’s trauma-related responses and equips them with tools to support their child’s recovery. Additionally, research has demonstrated the efficacy of TF-CBT in reducing PTSD symptoms, depression, and anxiety, making it one of the most well-supported therapeutic interventions for youth trauma.

What will your session look like?

In a typical TF-CBT session, your counselor at Dayspring will utilize a structured framework divided into three main components:

Psychoeducation - The counselor will provide psychoeducation about trauma and its effects, helping you and your child(ren) understand the impact of trauma on emotions and behavior.

Cognitive Processing - Cognitive-behavioral techniques will be introduced to help the child(ren) identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns associated with their traumatic experiences.

Trauma Narrative - The trauma narrative component allows your child(ren) to gradually and safely recount their traumatic experiences, facilitating processing and emotional regulation.

The benefits of TF-CBT for you are manifold. Children and adolescents frequently report significant reductions in trauma symptoms, emotional distress, and behavioral issues following treatment. TF-CBT not only addresses the symptoms associated with trauma but also promotes resilience and coping strategies by teaching you and your family how to deal with your feelings and thoughts constructively. It not only addresses a range of trauma-related issues including PTSD, depression, and anxiety, it also addresses behavioral problems stemming from trauma, such as aggression, hyperactivity, or withdrawal.

The number of sessions that you and your child(ren) may need can vary based on the individual needs of the child(ren) and the severity of their trauma. Generally, a treatment course may last between 12 to 16 sessions. However, some children may benefit from more extended therapy if they present with more complex trauma histories or co-occurring mental health issues. The flexibility of TF-CBT will allow your counselor to adapt their approach based on your child(ren)’s progress, ensuring that the therapy remains responsive to their evolving needs.
