We Help and Advise Youth 10 - 19

Psychotherapy is a fantastic way for all young people to get the emotional support they need. It teaches them how to deal with conflicts, manage their feelings, control urges, and find solutions to problems. Every child will receive help from Adolescent Counseling because they will learn skills needed for a lifetime.

At Dayspring, we offer professional counseling to clients from the age of 10 all the way through college. Those years can be a whirlwind, so we’ve divided our services into three categories: Youth, Teen, and College Age. This way, we can make sure our conversations and materials are totally appropriate for each age group.

Now, privacy and confidentiality are super important to our counselors, but it’s worth noting that counselors are mandated reporters for minors. This means they’re required to report to DHR any instances of child abuse or neglect which have not been previously reported. Parents and guardians are not encouraged to question their child/teen about the details of their counseling sessions as the adolescent may not feel safe to talk openly. The counselor will notify the parents if a child/teen is actively suicidal or planning to hurt themselves or someone else. Parents of children who are under the legal age of consent (currently age 14 in Alabama, but will be changing to age 16), can obtain medical records or can request to meet with the counselor.

Therapy is all about working with each adolescent individually. Counselors will use their professional knowledge to assess each client's needs and create an individualized  treatment plan.

Parents- please remember, it’s not a sign of failure if your child needs therapy and support from someone other than you. Parents have a unique bond with their children and a professional counselor will not weaken that bond, but will assist your child with learning skills to manage emotions and behaviors to improve their overall life.

Sometimes, family therapy sessions can also be helpful in helping the family adjust to changes in pre-teen and teen years. The interactions with other family members and changes in the home environment can create confrontations and confusion. Families can learn new communication techniques to improve the family interactions.

At Dayspring, we truly believe that adolescent counseling is an essential part of our services. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or need some support, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 256-878-3809.
