MBCT is rooted in the recognition that traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be highly effective in treating depression, but may not adequately prevent future episodes, especially in those with a history of recurrent depressive episodes. Researchers sought to create an intervention that could enhance the awareness of thought patterns and promote cognitive flexibility, enabling individuals to disengage from negative thought cycles that often accompany depressive episodes. The result was MBCT, which combines the principles of mindfulness with cognitive behavioral strategies to help individuals cultivate present-moment awareness and acceptance of their experiences.


By learning to observe their thoughts and feelings without judgment, you can break the cycle of rumination - a common precursor to depression. This approach encourages self-compassion and fosters a healthier relationship with one’s thoughts and emotions, providing individuals with valuable coping strategies you can apply in various life situations.


At Dayspring, you will be guided through mindfulness exercises, including body scans, mindful breathing, and meditation practices, followed by discussions about the experiences that arise during those practices. The curriculum is structured to progressively build mindfulness skills and integrate them with cognitive behavioral strategies to help you address unhelpful thinking patterns related to depression and anxiety. You will learn to recognize early warning signs of depressive relapse and to develop personalized strategies for managing those signs.


Research has shown that MBCT can be particularly effective in reducing the likelihood of relapse in individuals with a history of recurrent depression. By fostering mindfulness skills, you learn to approach negative thoughts and feelings from a non-judgmental perspective, diminishing their impact and allowing for a more balanced emotional experience. The primary focus of MBCT is to enable you to disengage from those negative thought patterns and reduce the risk of depression relapse. It encourages you to recognize that thoughts are transient and do not define their reality. This shift in perspective can lead to improved emotional well-being and greater psychological resilience.


The duration of MBCT treatment at Dayspring Center for Christian Counseling typically involves a structured program that consists of four weekly sessions followed by 4 biweekly sessions, each lasting approximately one hour, along with home practice assignments. While this format is designed to impart essential skills over a relatively short period, some participants may benefit from additional sessions or ongoing practice to reinforce their mindfulness skills and continue their personal growth. The flexible structure allows for adaptations based on your needs and circumstances, making it accessible to a diverse range of clients.
